Doula translates to "a woman who serves."

Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

While performing her role, a doula:

  • Provides emotional support during and after labor.

  • Uses comfort measures: breathing, relaxation, movement, positioning, massage, and aromatherapy.

  • Continuously reassures and comforts the mother (important word: continuous—a doula never leaves the mother’s side).

  • Helps a mother become informed about various birth choices.

  • Advocates for the mother and helps facilitate communication between the mother and care provider(s).

  • Looks after your partner as well (with rest, bathroom breaks, food, drink, ect.), but their primary goal is to help the laboring mother achieve her birth the way she desires.

  • Available 24/7 three weeks before and two weeks after your estimated due date.

A doula does NOT:

  • Perform clinical tasks, such as blood pressure, fetal heart checks, or vaginal exams.

  • Make decisions for you.

  • Speak to the staff instead of you regarding matters where decisions are being made.

  • Look down upon any decisions made even if they differ from your birth plan

  • Discourage you in any way from making decisions you feel are the best at that moment.
